The City After Dark: The Governance and Lived Experience of Urban Night-Time Culture

Postgraduate Research Award, University of Western Sydney, Centre For Cultural Research
$31,140+ pa.

This doctoral project is a component of an Australian Research Council Discovery-funded study of the experience, lived forms and governance of the urban night-time economy in Sydney. Its aims are to promote understanding of the long-term cultural and social sustainability of after-dark leisure practices, and of the safety and protection of a diverse range of participants and local communities. The research involves an innovative study of evidence about patterns of violence, crime and disorder in night-time settings, and will analyse official, public and private police responses to these urban phenomena within a critical social science and humanities framework. The candidate will develop their qualitative and quantitative research skills in an experienced interdisciplinary team based in the internationally renowned Centre for Cultural Research CCR).

Academic criteria: Applicants should hold a Bachelor Honours degree (Class 1 or 2.1) in Sociology, Criminology, Cultural Studies or an allied field, or equivalent qualifications and/or experience.
Scholarship:Competitive tax-free, index-linked stipend of $31,140 per annum for up to 3 years • Funded Research Training Scheme place

Criminology Research Grants

The 2007 round of Criminology Research Grants is now open for submissions:

Grants are to support research on the causes, correction and prevention of criminal behaviour, and related matters. Criteria used to assess the policy relevance of submissions for funding include their:

  • contribution to knowledge of crime trends which could be used for planning and resource allocation by government agencies;
  • examination of an under-researched topic;
  • relevance to a current or emerging serious criminal justice issue;
  • benefit in developing new policies or procedures for dealing with the crime problem in question;
  • benefit in devising crime reduction strategies;
  • assistance in developing police policies or practices;
  • benefit in devising legislative reform proposals;
  • support and assistance in the development of existing work by government agencies;
  • ability to inform training activities for criminal justice personnel;
  • assistance to victim support activities or services;
  • assistance in offender support activities or services; or their
  • contribution to statistical data holdings.
  The closing date for submissions is 24 August 2007
