Socio-Legal Studies

The Honours Program

Structure for Socio-Legal Studies Fourth Year Honours and for the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Socio-Legal Studies)

The Socio-Legal Studies Honours program is an advanced level of study at fourth-year designed to allow students to specialise their knowledge in Socio-Legal Studies. A key part of the Honours program is the Internship. This gives students the opportunity to work on a research project with an organisation working in the socio-legal area over the year. The Thesis allows students the opportunity to specialise in a socio-legal research area, with regular supervision from academics within the School of Political Science, Criminology and Sociology offered over the year. The Social Science Research Seminar is an intensive designed to prepare students for their thesis work. In choosing either Qualitative Research Methods or Social Research Design and Evaluation, students will be equipped to undertake their research and learn valuable skills both for the Honours year and beyond. The rich array of elective subjects offered allows students to further specialise.

The prerequisites for entry to fourth year Honours in Socio-Legal Studies are:

  • Completion of all the requirements for the BA
  • Completion of a major in Socio-Legal Studies
  • An average grade of H2A or higher over the second/third year subjects within the major

Students who do not meet these criteria may be granted admission to honours with the special approval of the Head of Department (or nominee) and the Faculty of Arts honours course advisor.

All students intending to undertake their thesis in Socio-Legal Studies will be required to submit a research proposal of at least 300 words (not 1000 as in previous years) as part of the entry procedure. It is recommended that this proposal be generated in consultation with the Socio-Legal Studies program convenor. Acceptance into the program is dependent upon completion of an adequate proposal as judged by the Socio-Legal Studies program convenor.
