Prof W.G. (Kit) Carson
M.A. (Oxford), Dip. Crim. (Cambridge) LL.D (Edinburgh) Kit Carson is former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland and before that he was successively Professor of Legal Studies, Dean of Social Sciences and then Deputy Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University. He is an Emeritus Professor of that university. Professor Carson is Chair of the Higher Education Advisory Committee for Victoria. He was formerly Chair of the Crime Prevention Research Advisory Council in Victoria and is currently a member of the Victorian Community Council on Crime and Violence. He has researched in the fields of white-collar crime, policing, disaster management and occupational health and safety. More recently he has produced papers on the principles of evidence- based policy, whole of government approaches and communalism. In the latter context he recently published a critique of contemporary uses of community and social capital within criminology and in social policy more generally. He has been extensively involved in the writing of the Victorian Implementation Review of the Recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Professor Carson’s influence on research in the field of criminology is the subject of a festschrift being published later in 2006.
